As the days in Madrid get longer and the time I have left here shorter, I’ve begun reflecting on what practical, day-to-day advice I would give to someone moving here. And the most practical thing in my life? The backpack. There is no item more circadian to my routine than my backpack, so here are some of the necessities I’ve learned to always keep with me over the past few months. 

I would like to dedicate this post to the woman who introduced me to the Spanish language, Dora, and her trusty backpack. 

1. Umbrella + Rain Jacket

   It’s rained here in Madrid more days than it hasn’t. I wish I was being hyperbolic here but I’m not, the month of March was  in 130 years, breaking a historic record. Always a safe idea to keep your paraguas in your bag.

2. Sudoku Book 

   This one is a no-brainer for when your friends back home are still asleep because of the time difference or you’re running low on your monthly data plan.

3. Headphones

   For the love of God, please don't be the person who plays videos from their phone on full volume on public transportation or takes a phone call on speakerphone. You're better than that. We all are. 

4. Tissues 

   For reasons I have yet to figure out, a lot of bathrooms in Madrid (especially bars and touristy places) do not have toilet paper. There are very few of my enemies who I would wish to be stuck in a situation like. Better safe than sorry to have some tissues on hand when out and about in the town. 

5. Portable Charger 

   Some days you leave the house with no idea when you’ll be back and no idea when you’ll have access to a reliable wall charger. A portable charger also proved to be extremely vital last week, when all of Spain and Portugal experienced a full-scale .  

6. Cash 

   Also proved important during the blackout! Cash is also smart to have a normal day because some stores have a purchase minimum to pay with a card. When all you’re really craving is a singular Diet Coke from the  after a long day of teaching, you’ll want to have some cash.
