Academic Culture

ղ Amsterdam provides an immersive educational experience, combining coursework with practical, hands-on learning to enhance students’ academic knowledge and cultural awareness. ղ courses typically follow a Monday through Thursday schedule, allowing for focused study and ample time for exploration. This format is enriched with co-curricular activities such as field trips to significant landmarks, guest lectures, and workshops that connect classroom topics to Amsterdam’s rich cultural and professional landscapes. Attendance is mandatory, reinforcing the importance of active engagement in the learning process.

ASU Courses: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Courses taught at ղ Amsterdam are typically for ղ students only. A typical class schedule will span from Monday to Thursday. Classes meet 2-4 times per week, for anywhere from 1-3 hours per class session, depending on the course. Attendance in ղ classes is strictly enforced, both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Instruction is supported and augmented online by ղ’s learning management system, Canvas.

With seminar-style sessions and small class sizes, students benefit from a collaborative and immersive environment that enhances both academic achievement and cultural appreciation.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other ղ courses begin or end.

Grading

ղ reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F. For ղ-administered courses, students’ grades are based on attendance, class participation, homework, project work, presentations, and midterm and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for ղ students.
